Other states may get tons of buzz for their barbecue, but one Illinois joint has all the critics and fans signing its praise. 17th Street BBQ—its original location is in Murphysboro, Illinois—is a serious contender in the best of the national best. (If you’re planning a visit, book a stay at Kite Hill Vineyards, Winery, and B&B in nearby Carbondale.)
17th Street BBQ is the brainchild of pit-master Mike Mills and his daughter Amy. Mike’s a legend in the barbecue world—a four-time World Champion and three-time Grand Winner at Memphis, known as the kingpin of “Q” contests. He also was Grand Champion of the Jack Daniel’s World Invitational Barbecue Cooking contest. The man has serious chops and he makes super-delicious meats.
Small-town Murphysboro is now big-time bbq country thanks to the Mills. 17th Street is best known for its flavorful Southern-style smoked ribs, but this meat is not the only star at the casual eatery. Pulled pork, brisket, turkey, and chicken are also on the menu. An appetizer lineup has pimento cheese, sausage and wings. The sides include fabulous baked beans made with five types of beans, and collard greens flavored with brisket. True to the homey feeling of the place, you’ll find from-scratch desserts that are as soothing as a cool breeze on a hot day.
